CHEP MEA Chooses PowerID BAP RFID Tags for its Automotive and Retail Solutions in South Africa

Johannesburg, South Africa and Petah Tikva, Israel – July 29, 2009 – The MEA division of CHEP, the global leader in pallet and container pooling services, announced that it has chosen the battery-assisted, passive (BAP) RFID tags of PowerID to track pallets and containers for its automotive and retail customers in South Africa.  CHEP MEA opted for PowerID’s labels for tracking items that pose challenges to traditional passive RFID labels such as automotive parts and retailer goods.

CHEP issues, collects, conditions and reissues more than 300 million pallets and containers from a global network of service centers, helping manufacturers and growers transport their products to distributors and retailers. Combining superior technology, decades of experience and an unmatched asset base, CHEP handles pallet and container supply chain logistics for customers in the consumer goods, produce, meat, home improvement, beverage, raw materials, petro-chemical and automotive industries.

CHEP provides value added services that improve supply chain visibility for its customers, and RFID is one technology used to heighten visibility.  CHEP utilizes passive labels for items that do not challenge RFID; however, when challenging materials are involved, CHEP decided to use PowerID’s BAP RFID labels – particularly for its automotive and retail customers.

“We selected PowerID tags for customers with items that challenge RFID performance,” said Victor Leftwick, CHEP MEA’s Technology Services Director.  “We are very satisfied with PowerID’s ability to provide us with full visibility as well as its team’s commitment and responsiveness to our needs.”

CHEP is using PowerID’s EPCglobal Class 1, Generation 2 labels with standard RFID readers, alongside passive Gen. 2 RFID labels.  CHEP uses PowerM and PowerG labels, depending on the items in the containers.

“We are thrilled that CHEP, a global leader in logistics, has chosen our BAP labels,“ said Erez Kahani, PowerID’s CEO. “Our work with CHEP reinforces our thinking that our labels serve a market need for customers that find passive RFID performance limited and active RFID too costly.”
